The Yucatan Peninsula is a place of rich history, natural beauty and primeval wonders. There exists quite a bit to the spot that makes it different from the rest of Mexico. Up until the 1950s the Yucatan remained more or less cut off from the remainder of the nation that was finally linked by rail and later a highway by the 1960s. Before that point the Yucatanís connection to the external world was by sea and consisted mainly of trade with Caribbean islands, the US and Europa. In 1972 the plans of a resort community had been introduced focused on what is currently Cancun, Mexico which is becoming one of the most well-liked traveler hotspots in the planet!
It is of course the natural beauty of this location that draws so many visitors in the direction of Yucatan; with the turquoise waters of the Caribbean in the south, the calm gulf waters to the north and plush jungles and underground rivers in between, itís no wonder people from throughout the world gather to this tropical paradise! Nature, Mayan traditions and warmth bring people back year after year. The powder white seashores, Mayan ruins, cenotes (underground rivers) and diverse wildlife are a few of the regions highlights.
While one can find many different Yucatan hotel options today; including numerous mega resorts that offer all-inclusive style vacations; they tend to be confined in nature and do little to reveal the abundant beauty and culture of the region! Based on personal experiences and years of feedback, we have come to believe the best choice for getting a true flavor of the area is by discovering the smaller Yucatan hotels and resorts. These places aren’t your typical mega resorts but do offer many of the identical amenities and whatís more, a freedom of opportunity to actually discover the land and uncover adventure. Unluckily, the misconception regarding the security of the area appears to promote the all-inclusive options versus getting out in it. As a full-time inhabitant of Tulum, Mexico for near 3 years now, I can personally testify to the safe travels in the area.
We have heard from hundreds of people and have visited lots of the best small resorts on the Yucatan and haven’t for a single moment felt unsafe. Actually you will feel more at home in one of these smaller boutique hotels than anything you’re likely to experience at a large all-inclusive alternative. The enchantment and generosity found off the beaten Yucatan path create stories which will last a lifetime and the folks you meet in these places will feel more like kin than one can imagine. You may be surprised on return visits that they’ll still remember your names!
The Yucatan is far more than Cancun mega resorts, posh Playa del Carmen hotels and spring break crowds. Witness the turtles lay eggs on the beach from one of many tulum hotels, swim with the whale sharks and watch a beautiful sunset in one of many fabulous Holbox Island hotels. Venture out, step outside the box and find your Mexico, discover your Yucatan, a region where fun, adventure and once in a lifetime experiences are made. See you in Mexico!
